Aaron as a Big Brother

Anna Mansfield

Aaron was truly a deeply caring person. One of the most amazing things I realized as an adult, was just how generous his heart was and how it extended beyond his family. The experiences of his life made him sensitive to the needs of young people and led him to understand things in a way many people don’t. He didn’t find success by moving in a straight line. He explored, he lived, he experienced, and finally, when he found the right path, he walked down it and took with him an understanding of the journey and a desire to help and support young people in theirs.

Growing up with Aaron as my big brother was a real adventure. He was 17 years older than me and I idolized him. His interests became my interests. I always wanted to hang out with him, play video games with him and listen to him play guitar.

For my 9th birthday, he gave me my first Nintendo and I have enjoyed video games ever since. He took me to buy my first electric guitar and gave me lessons so I could rock out just like him. We even ended up playing in a band together. Some of my favorite memories are of those times spent with him.

I am grateful that Aaron’s work will continue through the Aaron Barnett Foundation, and look forward to seeing my brother’s memory live on in the success of the students he championed for.
